There’s something about January, isn’t there? The excitement of a new year, a new chance to be the best version of you. Perhaps more organized, more together… I was looking at the planners at Target yesterday just longing to buy a pretty new one for the year. And of course every planner needs pretty DIY planner accessories like these beaded tassel bookmarks!
I love the look of tassels, and have been contemplating tassel projects for a while. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to use them, making these lovely little dangling bookmarks for planners and journals. And of course the gold beads seem to make everything more lovely. Attach a colorful paperclip to the end and we have these awesome little beaded tassel bookmarks!
How to Make Beaded Tassel Bookmarks
Make the Tassel
Choose the color of embroidery floss you want to use. I wrapped it around three fingers 20 times, then gently slid off the loops of string. If you want a slightly longer tassel, you could wrap it around 4 fingers instead.
Trim the extra embroidery floss off, so both ends are on the bottom end of your loops (you can see both ends of the string are on the bottom in the picture below).
Slide an extra piece of embroidery floss through the top of the loops and tie it in a double knot to secure it. You’ll want to leave this piece fairly long for now, since you’ll add beads to it soon. Then trim the bottom ends of each loop so they hang loose like a tassel.
Take another smaller piece of embroidery floss and tie it in a double knot around the tassel, near the top end.
Trim the ends of this piece off, leaving the knot secured around the tassel. Trim the ends of the tassel as needed to make them even, and make sure its the length you’d like.
Add the Beads
Next I used a flexible beading needle to add gold beads to the ends of the string tied to the top of the tassel. Slide the end of the needle over one of the strings, and add 10 gold beads. Then repeat on the other side.
Slide both of these longer strings through the needle next, and add three more gold beads. These last three beads will go on both strings at the same time, forming a little beaded loop.
Add the Paperclip
Tie a double knot to secure the beaded loop and get a paperclip to attach. I used a colored paperclip for each bookmark, to match the color of the tassel.
Decide how long you want your bookmark to be – I kept mine short, but you could make the bookmarks longer so they dangle more, too. Then just tie it to the top of the paperclip with a double knot and trim the end of the string as desired. (I ended up trimming it shorter than in the 2nd picture below.)
Notice I tied the string onto the top of the paperclip, opposite from the end where it opens to attach to a page. If you want to make this knot extra secure, you could add a small dab of craft glue to make sure the string doesn’t come untied from the paperclip.
I made three beaded tassel bookmarks in pink, blue, and purple. It would be really pretty to choose colors to match your planner or journal.
These bookmarks can be clipped to your page and hang out of the planner, which I think looks really pretty. You could also clip a bookmark near the back of the planner and let it hang down in your current page to mark your place. Either way, these beaded tassel bookmarks make such a cute planner or journal accessory!
These beaded tassel bookmarks turned out so lovely. All I had to do was make each tassel, add the beads, and tie on the paperclip. I can’t wait to use these pretty DIY planner accessories, and might even include some of them in the next journal gift set I make!
