I have to admit, I love finger puppets! I mean, I might even be a little obsessed. I’ve been dreaming up new ideas and these polar animal finger puppets just seemed so perfect for winter. The little animals are just so stinkin’ cute and finger puppets have become the perfect portable toy for us.
I keep several of these little finger puppet cuties in my bag so I can just pull them out whenever we need. Our little homemade finger puppets have been amazingly helpful on many occasions, when my daughter was getting restless or upset while we were out. I can pull out some little puppets and we have a puppet show on-the-go!
DIY Polar Animal Finger Puppets
- a small amount of black, white, grey, and orange felt
- 4 small black buttons
- free printable pattern (link in this post)
- black and white thread
- sewing needle
- lo-temp glue gun & glue sticks
Penguin Finger Puppet
First I cut the pieces out of felt for the penguin – two black body shapes, one white face/belly, and the little orange beak.
I heated up my glue gun and glued on two black buttons for the eyes near the top of the white piece. Then I glued the little orange beak to the top center.
Next, I glued the white piece onto one of the black body pieces, lining it up so it was even with the bottom edge. I strung some black thread through my needle, doubling it up and tying a knot at the end.
I placed both of the black penguin body pieces together, lining them up. I used the blanket stitch to sew up the left side, along the top, and down the right side. I left the bottom open. You can see the penguin finger puppet below – isn’t it so cute?
Polar Bear Finger Puppet
Next I prepared the felt pieces for the polar bear. I used white felt to cut out two body shapes, grey felt for the nose/snout and belly, and a tiny amount of black for the little nose (the tiny black nose is the only piece not included in the pattern. It’s just a small black circle, but you could use a small black button instead).
Next, I glued the tiny black nose onto the small grey nose/snout piece. Then I used some black thread (I doubled this thread to make it more visible) to stitch on a little mouth.
Then I glued on the two button eyes, the finished nose piece, and the grey oval belly.
I put some white thread on my needle next, doubling it and tying a knot in the end. I placed both of the white bear body pieces together and sewed them together using a blanket stitch up the left side, along the top, and down the right side. I left the bottom open.
The finished polar bear finger puppet is below. Super cute!
And here are both of the polar animal finger puppets together. I love how adorable they turned out – the penguin looks ready to waddle out of the picture. 🙂
These polar animal finger puppets were super easy to make – I just had to cut out the felt pieces, then glue and stitch them together.
