Do you ever feel stuck in a rut during the winter? You can’t spend as much time outside because of the cold weather, and sometimes you start to feel like you need to do something… That’s when it’s really nice to have a go-to list of winter activity ideas! You can look over your list and find something fun, no matter what the weather.
These 12 exciting winter activity ideas will be so much fun for your family! I included a lot of super exciting indoor activities, along with some outdoor winter favorites. Because no list of winter fun would be complete without building a snowman…
12 Exciting Winter Activity Ideas Your Family Will Love
1. Build a snowman
If you live in an area that gets snow, this is pretty high on the list. I used to love getting all bundled up and playing in the snow as a kid. We dressed up the snowman with an old hat and scarf and gave him a carrot nose.
I’ve seen cute ideas online for snow painting, too. (I think they add a little food coloring to water, then put it in a squirt bottle to squirt on the snow). I’ve never tried it, but it sounds pretty fun to add a little color to your snow creations!
2. Indoor or outdoor snowball fight
I love playing in the snow, but after making pom pom snowballs to use indoors I think I like indoor snowball fights even better than outdoor ones. An indoor snowball fight is so much fun for the whole family, without the cold snow hitting you. No matter what the weather is like where you live, you can toss pom pom snowballs at each other. The indoor snowball fight kit is one of the most popular posts on my blog- you won’t want to miss it!
3. Go bowling or play another sport indoors
I was never good at bowling, but my in-laws love it. It can be a fun indoor activity when the weather isn’t so nice outside. If you don’t like bowling, maybe there’s an indoor basketball court where you could all shoot hoops together. Or you might have an old ping pong table in the basement and decide to host your own little family ping pong tournament!
4. Indoor activity center
We went to an indoor trampoline center while on vacation with family one year and it was so much fun hopping around on all those trampolines! Some activity centers have bounce houses, mini golf, laser tag, even play areas for toddlers! Make sure you check out what’s offered in your area so you’ll be ready on a day when you really want to get out of the house together.
5. Bake cookies for friends and family
If you’re looking to make yummy treats together, consider making a few extra to share with friends and family. You could stop by their house to deliver a thoughtful plate of cookies- I bet that would really make someone’s day! Imagine grandma’s delight to receive freshly baked treats from her grandkids.
6. Camp out in the living room
You could work together to set up a really cool fort in the living room or put up a tent. Add lots of comfy pillows so you can hang out inside. You could even make paper stars to hang up or put up a string of Christmas lights in the living room so it feels like you’re camping under the stars!
If you really get into it, you can make a camping-themed dinner like hot dogs or burgers, potato salad, and s’mores flavored cookies for dessert.
7. Go to a movie or concert- or watch fun movies at home
You could pop some popcorn, set out some movie snacks, and host your own mini movie marathon at home! Or head to the theater to watch a movie or go see a concert together.
8. Visit a museum
If you have young kids, you might take a trip to the local children’s museum. If your kids are older, you could go to an art museum, natural history museum, or even an indoor aquarium! I love the educational aspect that’s included in this, and it’s so much fun for the kids. If you’re concerned about the cost, check out how to save money on admission to museums and attractions for some money saving ideas.
If you’re looking to bundle up in your winter gear and play in the snow, sledding can be so much fun! Younger kids might enjoy sitting on the sled while daddy pulls it around the yard. Older kids will probably want to tackle some nearby hills to enjoy the thrill of sliding down the snow!
10. Ice skating
If your kids are old enough, you can visit an ice skating rink together! I loved to ice skate as a kid (despite the fact that I wasn’t very good at it!). Check with local skating rinks for their open skating hours and prices. Most places will rent you ice skates, so don’t worry if you don’t have your own.
11. Have your own little dance party
Put on some fun tunes and feel free to sing along! Sometimes it’s nice to just dance together – a chance to be silly and try funny dance moves. You don’t have to have great rhythm to have fun dancing together. Just find some fun songs the kids will love and enjoy!
12. Work on a project together
Have you been meaning to work on a project together? When the weather is keeping you inside, it’s a great time to work on something fun together! Whether you work together to build an amazing lego creation or solve a big puzzle, it’s an awesome time to hang out and spend lots of time together talking while you work.
Don’t let the cold weather ruin your plans for awesome family fun! There are so many fun things you can do in the winter, whether you decide to bundle up and play in the snow or have a great time indoors.
